4 Reasons Your Air Conditioner is Not Cooling Your House
Why is my air conditioner not blowing cool air? What should I do if it starts hissing or bubbling? How can I stop water leaking? Are ice formations normal? This blog addresses your questions so you can enjoy a well-functioning AC at home.
1. Your air conditioner fan is set incorrectly on your thermostat
Your AC fan could be on the wrong setting if you only feel intermittent cool air. Turning the AC fan ‘ON' makes the blower run non-stop, so that it runs without cooling your home.
Tip: Use the ‘AUTO' setting on your thermostat instead; it turns your AC's blower off automatically every time your room reaches the desired temperature.
2. Your air filter is clogged
Your air conditioner can't keep you cool when its air filters are clogged by dust, debris, or dander. Airflow becomes restricted, making it difficult to move, cool and cycle back air into your home.
Tip: Check your air filters every month. You just need a little soap and water to clean it before replacing it when it's dry.
3. The refrigerant is leaking
The refrigerant is a compound fluid in your AC system that converts warm air into cold air. If there's a leak, then your home cannot be cooled to the temperature on your thermostat.
Tip: Immediately contact an expert technician if you discover the following signs:
- Hissing or bubbling noise
- Ice crystals forming on the refrigerant line outside
- Your AC doesn't cool your home when it's hot during the day, but works fine when it's cool at night
4. Your evaporator coil is frozen
An evaporator coil absorbs heat from the air in your house, allowing cool air to blow out. If the coil is frozen it's incapable of absorbing warm air.
Tip: Call in a professional if you notice a pool of water around your AC unit. Coil freezing may be caused by: refrigerant leaks, clogged air filters, or short-cycling (frequent on-and-off cycles of your AC which will increase your energy bills).
