We all know servicing our AC units are both cumbersome and costly. Having some knowledge about maintaining your AC unit not only saves you from having to call the servicing guys but it does help lower electricity consumption too!

Here are a few tips that will help you make your AC last!

1. Clean the Condenser Unit

Cleaning the condenser unit of your AC should be a habit. Chances are that if you’ve neglected the cleaning for a while, a year’s worth of dirt and debris may have clogged up the cooling fins. That’s why your AC isn’t cooling nearly as well as it could. Don’t worry, you don’t need any special skills, tools or experience. Just clean the fins with a vacuum or soft brush. It’s that easy!

2. Check the Evaporator

What is an evaporator? Basically, the evaporator coil is the part of an air conditioner that absorbs the heat from the air in your house. The main symptom of a faulty evaporator is no cold air from the AC system. All you need to do is clean the coil with a damp cloth and you’re good to go.

3. Check the Coolant Level

What actually cools your home through an AC is a coolant called Freon. Any unit that lacks enough coolant will not be able to cool your home efficiently. You can’t do everything though, only a pro can check the coolant level and top it up.

4. Clean the Filter

Just like the condenser, your AC filter unit within the indoor box should also be cleaned regularly. Make sure you check it at least once a month. If you’re staying in an area that receives more sand or dust, you should check this at least once every two weeks.

5. Cultivate proper on and off procedures

If you’re leaving on a holiday, or will be away from the house for a while, make sure your AC is properly turned off. Turning it to fan mode before your head out can help dry the unit completely. It’s also best to cut off the main power supply to prevent the unit from consuming electricity when you’re not using it.
